Reading Coor, English Coor & Grade One Teachers attend Reading & English District Meeting

"Tabula rasa" meaning empty. Empty ila manila paper(HAHAHA!) That is because with our quite number of reading programs, its so hard to choose which of them to be listed on this wee space of the paper. Walay nay mas dako pa ani?jejeje

Last January 27, 2012 at 3:00 PM, Mrs. Jessica A. Laguitao(School Reading Coordinator), Mrs. Miira S. Ellevera (School English Coordinator), and grade one teachers: Rowena L. Candog, Lucila Sustiguer and Elmira D. Salazar were sent to Davao City Special School for the Reading and English district meeting which was conducted by Mrs. Myla Rosario (District Reading Coordinator) and Mrs. Rosebel Narciso (District English Coordinator).
During the meeting, the topics discussed were the blogsite update, NAT preparation, school's reading plan and schedule of school's reading evaluation.
With regards to our blogsite, Mrs. Ellevera managed to update our site from time to time. The NAT preparation of our school was also on track; for as we know all LAGES teachers share in the rigid NAT review done everyday at 3:00 PM, aside from respective subject teachers reviews (For the record, last NAT 2011, our school placed 5th in the district ranking). While Mrs. Laguitao showed dedication in training teachers to be equipped with techniques and strategies in teaching reading.
However, there was a problem with the reading evaluation since other schools disagreed with the said activity. And as for our school, Mrs. Laguitao and Miss Ginaliza Nomio were already tasked by Dr. Arlenor T. Abelardo to take care of this matter.
There was a small group discussion about the reading programs of the respective schools. Mrs. Lguitao was able to comprehensively discuss our existing school's reading program. This was also made possible with the help of other LAGES teachers who were around on the meeting.
Mrs. Ignacio even commended our good reading programs. She find the remediation technique of our grade one teachers something which would be rewarding on the part of our readers-at-risk since they were grouped according to their reading level. Hence, she believed that the appropriate help will be extended to them.
The meeting ended at 5:30 PM. Our teachers might have went home tired but they never have turned their backs on their mission. . to make every child a reader.

LAGES Teachers are AUTHORS, too

After the birthday galore, LAGES teachers busied themselves in the creation of LAGES workbook. They were grouped according to grade levels. Each grade levels were expected to formulate or compile stories based on reading competencies. The purpose of this workbook is to improve and enrich the comprehension reading skills of  the LAGES pupils.
Teachers really spent time deliberating on the competencies of each story. This has been the third session of this workbook-making, and they do this every School-Based Training Program.
Hopefully, the workbook would be published and used next school year.

     ABANTE teachers!

Grandiose QUADRO BIRTHDAY Celebration

Four fabulous LAGES  January-celebrant teachers enjoined their birthday bash last January 27, 2012.

They were Mrs. Betty Estorgio, Mrs. Jessica Laguitao, Mrs. Djoanna Bachinicha and principal, Dr. Arlenor T. Abelardo (all birthday dates were kept secret for privacy. . basta January sila!). LAGES teachers have free lunch courtesy of these celebrants wherein each time they(LAGES teachers) sip the "pansit", wished them long life; bite the buttered chix tigh, hoped they will be sexy forever (wow legs); dip spoon into "nilagang beef", prayed them to have bountiful blessings all throughout the year; savor the "pritolaw", that whatever circumstances-hilaw man o luto they will be strong to face it;  and chew the fruit salad, for a colorful year ahead for them.
According Hindu's beliefs, people who are born on January are ambitious, serious, they love to teach and be taught, love children, smart, neat and organized. No wonder why they become teachers for they truly possess the qualities of one.

Happy Birthday Teachers!

Asedilla: New LAGES Talent

LAGES is very proud to announce its newest singing teacher sensation. . Mrs. Mary Ann Asedilla!

Right! she is a new grade one teacher here in our school but she has shown an over flowing confidence in singing. In fact she represented our school to a singing contest (teachers' category) in the recently concluded Talomo District Cultural Arts Festival. There were 15 teachers from other Talomo District schools but our "pambato" never felt a single sting of nervousness. Mr. Jose N. De Lara Jr., Talomo District Supervisor even commented that Ma'am Ann was gifted with a modulated voice.
The LAGES is very proud of you Ma'am Ann. And watch out for her this coming King & Queen of Hearts Coronation Day for she will be showcasing her God-given talent.

It's Feeding Frenzy Time here in Leon

Last January 16, 2011, our school conducted a school feeding among selected pupils. This is in line with the school's advocacy to lessen the wasted and severely wasted pupils.
The newly installed canteen manager, Mrs. Jovelyn Montilla supervised the said feeding. She served the kids with a very healthy chocolate drink.
The pupils indeed enjoyed their free drink.
However, Mrs. Montilla reported that there is already a great improvement with school's nutritional status. This was based on the reports she had gathered from the advisers.
This clearly imply that we have battled the malnutrition in our school through weekly feedings

LAGES Teachers visits BEATO

We were privileged to visit the relics of Pope John Paul II at the Pope John Paul College located at Ecoland, Davao City. This was a once in a life time experience. We have seen the bullet slugs that hit the Pope last 1983, his blood, pictures, rosaries he used and many others. There was a long queue of people who hoped to see these memorabilia but this did not stop us. Truly, it was a blessed experience.

VIANCA: AT YOUR SERVICE

Vianca Cleans the backyard garden.

My motto in life is “TO BE OF SERVICE TO OTHERS.” Nobody taught me this lesson but I find great joy in helping other people; be it in lager scope or simpler ways.

With this vision, I joined the Girl Scouts of the Philippines. It is an organization which aims to develop young girls and young women to be progressive, dynamic, patriotic and God-loving through the use of non-formal educational methods and techniques.
Girl scouting makes a difference in my life. I gain confidence, build camaraderie and most of all; it has been an avenue of my mission which is to emerge in community outreaching. Oftentimes, we conduct community services such as clean-up drives, tree planting, rescue operations and non-formal educations.
I am a plain member of the organization, but that does not mean, I work less. Every time, I offer my service, I give my best. I understand I earn nothing from doing these things; but I don’t care because doing these things makes me happy. It makes me feel complete and satisfied.
Since Girl Scouting has motivated me to be a community servant, one time a flood struck in our place. It was around ten o’clock in the evening of June 26, 2009. It was sudden. Villagers panicked as the water rushed inside their homes. We immediately put our things on elevated places. And after which, I do not know what has drove me but I found myself on other homes; helping other people. I gathered the little children and brought them to a safer place while their parents were busy with their things. I made them feel calm by leading them to pray hard to God for guidance and for keeping their families safe as they struggle in the flood. We sang worship songs. We had a small sari-sari store; I took some instant noodles and cooked, fed these to the children. They were hungry and they enjoyed eating. I do not want them to be traumatized due to the disaster that occurred. When the water subsided, I delivered the children back to their families.
On the next day, everybody was busy cleaning their places. The flood brought a knee-high mud into each home. And during these moments, one place would be left devastated; the Leon A. Garcia Sr. Elementary School, my school. On my way, I convinced the other available Girl Scouts to accompany me to the school. I was glad many answered to my call for there were five Girl Scouts joined with me. When we arrived their, teachers soaked into the mud. They were helpless. We helped them in our best way. We scooped the mud out of the room; we washed the furniture and assisted our teacher in any way they want us to be of help. We tried to salvage the school documents since these are important. I was concerned with our school because I do not want learning to be delayed. The school should be prepared the soonest possible so that we could have our classes resume.

During the flood, I found out that most of the flood debris was garbage. After a month, I organized a “Canal Brigade Campaign” in our school. We cleaned up the canals in our community. We removed the materials that caused the clogging. We gathered the garbage that could be recycled such as plastics, bottles and iron-made materials. We sold it to a nearby junkshop. We bought “merienda” out of our earnings from the garbage.
But what has inspired me during the time we did our clean-up drive? Other community people joined with us. They brought their broom sticks, bolos and shovel. I did hope that these would be a beginning of a good practice and they would make this act a habit because this could be a big help for flood control and prevention; as well as it promotes sanitation in the community.
With all these efforts, I was awarded Girl Scout of the Year in our school. I never expected such commendation for all I know I did all those things for the love of community service.
The Taal Village where I belong is a depressed area. Due to poverty, some young children are not able to attend school. I make it a mission that some of my time especially during Saturdays or Sundays to gather these children and teach them simple lessons such writing the alphabets, singing rhymes and learning good habits (washing hands, brushing teeth, etc.). I know I am not as knowledgeable like my teachers (but I will soon because I want to become a teacher someday). These simple acts of mine were just a way of helping these children so they would know simple things which I believe could help them someday. However, when I become a teacher, I would be a dedicated one. I aim to lessen illiteracy. I want very child to learn. This would be my purpose in life.
When my teacher told me that I would be a candidate for this search, my impression was I do not fit for this. I am a simple person who does simple things. But I know there are lots of simple people like me out there. It’s an honor to represent them. And I hope to inspire other people.
